12vDC P0WER PACKS

HyDrive produce a range of versatile DC Power-Packs for use on steering applications and Automatic Pilots. Versions are available with 2-speed outputs on control for use with joy-stick and independent autopilot. As with the larger systems, these are built specifically to meet your own requirements.

Standard Systems can be supplied in 12VDC & 24VDC (except Powerkit-12 available as 12volt DC only) with larger voltages also available on request.

The HyDrive POWERKIT-12 is 12volt DC system designed to provide state-of-the-art Electronic-hydraulic power steering to handle large horsepower or multiple outboard engines. Tried and proven for over 3 years in our USA and UK markets on extreme performance boats, we now offer it to Outboard Dealers and boat builders world-wide to maintain their ability to compete with the very latest in outboard steering technology.

The system can be used to upgrade existing steering, or can be installed as a complete steering unit.

The heart of the package is the microprocessor controlled pump unit which senses loads and delivers pressures up to 1000psi to handle the most powerful applications with finger-tip control on the wheel. This “smart” pump cycles into neutral with minimum current draw when no load is sensed and instantly delivers flow and pressure when loads are applied.

The pump unit comes as a package with a single station steering helm unit which delivers 50cc per rev giving very direct steering with a turns ratio on a 210BH outboard steering cylinder of only 3 turns lock to lock.

This is the basic start-up kit:-

  • POWERKIT-12
    Comprising:-
  • 1 x HD12VDC PUMP UNIT
  • 1 X PS50 HELM UNIT
  • This kit must be added to Steering Cylinders, which are available to suit all types of outboards and engine wells.
Models also available for sterndrives and inboards!

12vDC - 24vDC POWER PACKS

STEERING CONTROL OPTIONS

HyDrive has a range of helm controls available to complete your power steering system, depending on the application and personal preferences

PS-RANGE of Power Assisted Steering helms come in a range of displacements from 50cc/rev to 1000cc/rev to suit most cylinder combinations. This standard helm provides instant manual back-up in case of power failure. There is no limit to the number of steering stations that can be fitted using this range of helm units.

The PS-RANGE of helms has an optional TILTING mechanism to provide for adjustable wheel position through a range of angles. Ideal for inclined consoles or flybridges. Adjustment is a simple press of a lever on the underside of the helm.

JOY-WHEEL helm units come complete with a stainless steel half-wheel and provide an alternative to the traditional JOY-STICK. The spring-loaded wheel self-centres and requires a small range of movement left and right to activate the steering valve - in the same way as the traditional joystick. This helm unit looks identical to the Admiral model 101 helm unit, but is 12 or 24VDC electrically operated. This unit is very popular on sports fishing boats for use on tuna towers, where fitting full hydraulic control is often difficult.

JOYSTICK
Control is very simple, and takes very little space. It is an economical means of having additional control stations and can be used in addition to a PS-Helm unit, or (where survey allows) as the sole means of control.

LIMIT SWITCHES
must be fitted with both the JOY-WHEEL and the JOY-STICK to prevent over-run of the system under pressure, and overheating the oil as a result. One limit switch is required for each side of the tiller arm which is adjusted to stop power to the steering valve just before full stroke is achieved by the steering unit.

Where JOYSTICK or JOYWHEEL control is to be used, the power-pack of the steering system must be ordered for use with autopilot or joystick to ensure it is provided with the correct solenoid valve and flow control. It is essential to adjust the flow control to provide the best speed of movement for safe and effiicient handling.

EMERGENCY MANUAL HELM units are available in various displacements from 35cc/rev to 165cc/rev. These HD Series helm units are high performance piston pumps, isolated from the main power-assisted circuit by means of manual ball-valves. When valves are selected to manual these helms can provide instant and positive movements of the cylinders at pressures up to 1000psi. (See brochure on HD Series helms for full range of models and specifications)

BASIC SPECIFICATIONS

5000 Series Cylinders

Add Stroke Dimensions of 305mm for 12” stroke, and 407mm for 16” stroke for extended length

These figures apply to all 5000 Series Standard, SS and EN Series models. It does not apply to HD Series.

*TORQUE Figures calculated using DUAL cylinders with a system pressure of 1500psi and using a tiller length of 10.6" (270mm) for 12" stroke cylinders, and 14.25" (362mm) for 16" stroke cylinders. These torque figures should not be exceeded for selection of the correct model as this is the Maximum torque the system should be required to generate.
*VOLUME Figures calculated for total of DUAL cylinders in standard push-pull circuit.
*WHEEL TURNS given are for emergency steering only with model 105 helm unit - larger displacement helms are available (see details below.) To calculate wheel turns, divide the volume of the cylinders selected by the displacement of the helm unit per rev.
